Feb 02, 2016 · Argon hydrogen is the gas of choice for thick stainless and aluminum cutting (> 1/2") The mixture typically used is 35% hydrogen: 65% argon (H-35). Argon hydrogen is the hottest burning plasma gas and provides the maximum cutting capability. (Argon hydrogen is used in water injection torches up to 1000 amps for cutting up to 6" stainless).
That way, the sheet goes straight from cutting to welding, with little/no additional prep. I do use the plasma PM 600 or PM 1250 for cutting irregular shapes out of aluminum. The edges are then generally prepped with an aluminum burr.

The technology gets a bad rap, though, when the discussion turns to cutting aluminum. There are five preconceptions that many fabricators have about turning to plasma to cut aluminum. But according to three experts, new plasma cutting systems produce good results on aluminum.

Do not cut aluminum alloys underwater or on a water table unless you can prevent the accumulation of hydrogen gas. Note: With proper mitigation, most aluminum alloys can be plasma cut on a water table. An exception is aluminum-lithium alloys. Never cut aluminum-lithium allows in the presence of water. Feb 20, 2008 · The second 2 are 3/16" aluminum. Very little dross on either of them as pics show.The final pic is just taking the 2 pieces of 1/8" & open corner welded them , no sanding,no buffing no wire wheel or flap disc Results are O.K. in my books. What do you think. Plasma cutter used was 2050 Miller & welded with 180 Syn.
Plasma cutting aluminium can offer significant advantages over laser cutting, particularly when it comes to thickness, as laser will only cut metals up to around 25 mm thick, while plasma can cut through aluminium up to 160 mm. Plasma also wins financially as plasma cutting has both lower equipment and operating costs.
The wrong gas leads to bad cuts with a lot of slag. This is a common problem with cutting aluminum using a plasma cutter. When cutting metals other than aluminum, a plasma cutter just needs regular air, which is compressed and filtered.
